about

“It (The Super Villain Jazz Band) heralds the arrival of a new major voice in jazz, one whose name belongs in the pantheon of its true heroes.” - Russ Musto, New York Jazz Record

"His Debut shows once again how solid writing can bring out the best in players… Each episode propels the next and gives impressive solos by White… Even the arranging details refresh the ear…” - Jon Garelick, Downbeat Magazine (4 Stars)

“In The Super Villain Jazz Band, Matt White validates himself as a legitimate jazz composer assisted by a group of outstanding jazz sidemen in an exceptional collection of jazz compositions.” - Jeffrey P. Uhrich, AllAboutJazz.com

My music reflects all my interests in music and life. A song may draw influence from Woody Shaw, Stravinsky, Van Gogh, an old spiritual, a pop diva, and a geometric shape. Every tune and performance is a little puzzle to be organized and interpreted. Sometimes the inspiration is humor (The Yankee Poured Out the Bacon Grease), or a hypothetical story where a machine becomes self-aware (The Hadron Collider). Sometimes it hinges on a hook and the question "Can we make that work?" (a cover of Britney Spears' Toxic with a tone row break).

The Super Villain Jazz Band was recorded in the summer of 2012 between tour dates (i was on the road with The Mavericks) in the historic Castle Studios. It features my favorite musicians and friends I developed during my time in Nashville - some of the best creative and session musicians in the world - including: Jim White, Joe Davidian, Jonathan Wires, Evan Cobb, and Don Aliquo.
